Following a suicide attempt, the author was admitted to the psychiatric unit of a Whitechapel hospital, Rachel Ward. Slowly going blind because of diabetes, she found the company and love of her fellow patients, God, Bones and Mad Mary, to be more healing than a caseful of psychiatric drugs.
