Dutch: A Memoir of Ronald Reagan (Paperback)
One of the most controversial books of recent times, this fictionalized biography of Reagan takes the listener from Dutch’s birth to a poignant epilog focusing on the former president’s dignified acknowledgment of his Alzheimer’s disease. It highlights the contrasting eras of his athletic youth as lifeguard turned actor and his passionate and awkward summit meetings with Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev. Because the listener is unable to reference the numerous footnotes, Morris’s account appears to be completely valid, resulting in an objective yet not unsympathetic portrayal. Although enhanced by a few sound bites of Reagan’s speeches, the additional sound effects are jarring and unnecessary. Morris’s eloquent, image-provoking phrases and painstaking research make this an intriguing title that will have a large audience despite or perhaps because of its recent controversy.
