In this book the author has been compressed the whole of the Abhidhamma Pitaka and its supplement the Visuddhimagga and it has been mostly written in aphoristic small sentences. The book is very popular and today it is taught as the first book to the students of Abhidhamma in the monasteries of Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand and Indochina. It is rather better not to call it the first book for it is really a guide through the whole bulk of Abhidhamma pitaka. It gives a very vivid exposition of the method adopted in the analysis and grouping of the state of thing (Dhamma) in the Dhamma sanguine as a system. This book has been written for the student who after studying the Abhidhamma-sangaha is going to take up the original books of the Abhidhamma pitaka; and for this reason, the author freely quoted passages from the Pali text, an intimate acquaintance with the languages and style which would be very necessary at this stage.
